If your battery is getting weak, anything connected to a serial port may fail. If you can't replace your battery immediately, turn the Mac off, remove the battery, and when you turn the Mac back on, reset the time and date and re-select the serial ports. (Use the alarm clock desk accessory to set date and time and the Chooser to re-select the serial ports. You will have to reset these parameters every time you turn the Mac on until you replace the battery.
